DETROIT -- Bobby Jones took a no-hitter into the 8th inning as the New York (NL) Mets defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 2 to 0 at Tiger Stadium.
Jones(6-6) was virtually untouchable. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings reducing his ERA from 3.83 to 3.55. The right-handed Jones lost his chance for a no-hitter when Phil Nevin singled with two outs in the 8th inning. New York (NL) had only 6 hits for the night.
Jones got help from John Franco who earned his 10th save. Felipe Lira(2-4) was the loser. He gave up 5 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

MIAMI GARDENS -- Pedro Martinez(9-4) was on top of his game in Florida as he tossed a beauty of a no-hitter against the Florida Marlins. The Montreal Expos won by a score of 2 to 0.
Martinez was spectacular. He walked 2 Florida batters. The tension started to build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified. Martinez chalked up 11 strikeouts. The pitchers took over after the 1st inning as neither team was able to score again.
Alex Fernandez(6-4) was hit with the loss. He was stingy with the baserunners, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings.
What a show!' Montreal's manager said. 'Martinez was great out there -- I'm happy that he got it.'

DETROIT -- The Tigers scored 3 runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Mariano Rivera and won the game in walk-off fashion in the 10th in an ABSOLUTE THRILLER!
Tigers prospects were looking grim heading into the 9th. But they used three pinch hitters to pull of a miracle. Here's how it happened: Damion Easley walked to begin in the inning and then stole second in ballsy fashion. Juan Encarnacion singled to put runners at first and third. Melvin Nieves and Brian Hunter were retired back to back. Then, with two outs, Travis Fryman (4-for-5 on the day) smacked a deep home run into the upper deck in left! Absolute jubilation in the crowd!
In the 10th inning, Bobbo Higginson doubled and raced home on a Walbeck single! Incredible game folks. It was Mariano Rivera's 5th blown save of the season. Total bedlam at the plate as the Tigers' bench cleared out to watch Bobbo win it!

MONTREAL -- The Detroit Tigers let a shoe-in victory slip between their fingers in dramatic fashion tonight, falling 5-4 in a dramatic crowd-pleaser at Olympic Stadium. The Tigers were leading the game 4-0 before allowing 5 unanswered runs.
Montreal won the game with a run in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Mike Lansing delivered a base-hit. Rondell White dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. David Segui then was walked
intentionally. Darrin Fletcher stepped in and he doubled giving Montreal the victory and sending the 30,559 home-town fans home happy. Detroit was out-hit by Montreal, 12 hits to 8.
The Tigers were apparently so scared of David Segui, the hottest bat in the majors, that they intentionally walked him in the 9th to push the winning run into scoring position. Bubba Trammell's weak arm couldn't throw the winning run out at the plate.
The Tigers had a huge first inning, knocking out starter Hermanson, but could not hold off the lead. The entire bullpen collasped in the late innings. Reliever Mike Myers was the real goat. He simply couldn't record an out and walked many.
The Tigers would've had the game safely in their hands in the 7th, but Brian Hunter with a 95% chance of scoring, rolled a 19 and Fletcher blocked the plate as Hunter collided with him. Incredible play.
"We really seemed like we were rounding a corner, improving, but things are again looking grim," said McNeil after the game. "I'm just deflated right now. We had that game on a silver platter. We had a total open net and missed. It was a shocking feeling."
