METS 1-HIT TIGERS

DETROIT -- Bobby Jones took a no-hitter into the 8th inning as the New York (NL) Mets defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 2 to 0 at Tiger Stadium.

Jones(6-6) was virtually untouchable.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings reducing his ERA from 3.83 to 3.55.  The right-handed Jones lost his chance for a no-hitter when Phil Nevin singled with two outs in the 8th inning.  New York (NL) had only 6 hits for the night.

Jones got help from John Franco who earned his 10th save. Felipe Lira(2-4) was the loser.  He gave up 5 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

MIAMI GARDENS -- Pedro Martinez(9-4) was on top of his game in Florida as he tossed a beauty of a no-hitter against the Florida Marlins.  The Montreal Expos won by a score of 2 to 0.

Martinez was spectacular.  He walked 2 Florida batters.  The tension started to build around the 6th inning.  By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified.  Martinez chalked up 11 strikeouts.  The pitchers took over after the 1st inning as neither team was able to score again.

Alex Fernandez(6-4) was hit with the loss.  He was stingy with the baserunners, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings.

What a show!' Montreal's manager said.  'Martinez was great out there -- I'm happy that he got it.'

DETROIT -- The Tigers scored 3 runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Mariano Rivera and won the game in walk-off fashion in the 10th in an ABSOLUTE THRILLER!

Tigers prospects were looking grim heading into the 9th.  But they used three pinch hitters to pull of a miracle.  Here's how it happened: Damion Easley walked to begin in the inning and then stole second in ballsy fashion.  Juan Encarnacion singled to put runners at first and third.  Melvin Nieves and Brian Hunter were retired back to back.  Then, with two outs, Travis Fryman (4-for-5 on the day) smacked a deep home run into the upper deck in left!  Absolute jubilation in the crowd!

In the 10th inning, Bobbo Higginson doubled and raced home on a Walbeck single!  Incredible game folks.  It was Mariano Rivera's 5th blown save of the season.  Total bedlam at the plate as the Tigers' bench cleared out to watch Bobbo win it!

MONTREAL -- The Detroit Tigers let a shoe-in victory slip between their fingers in dramatic fashion tonight, falling 5-4 in a dramatic crowd-pleaser at Olympic Stadium.  The Tigers were leading the game 4-0 before allowing 5 unanswered runs.

Montreal won the game with a run in the 9th inning.  After an out was recorded, Mike Lansing delivered a base-hit.  Rondell White dug into the batters box next, but he struck out.  David Segui then was walked
intentionally.  Darrin Fletcher stepped in and he doubled giving Montreal the victory and sending the 30,559 home-town fans home happy.  Detroit was out-hit by Montreal, 12 hits to 8.

The Tigers were apparently so scared of David Segui, the hottest bat in the majors, that they intentionally walked him in the 9th to push the winning run into scoring position.  Bubba Trammell's weak arm couldn't throw the winning run out at the plate.

The Tigers had a huge first inning, knocking out starter Hermanson, but could not hold off the lead.  The entire bullpen collasped in the late innings.  Reliever Mike Myers was the real goat.  He simply couldn't record an out and walked many.

The Tigers would've had the game safely in their hands in the 7th, but Brian Hunter with a 95% chance of scoring, rolled a 19 and Fletcher blocked the plate as Hunter collided with him.  Incredible play.

"We really seemed like we were rounding a corner, improving, but things are again looking grim," said McNeil after the game.  "I'm just deflated right now.  We had that game on a silver platter.  We had a total open net and missed.  It was a shocking feeling."

A-ROD POWERS M'S 4 GAME SWEEP

SEATTLE AT DETROIT
Mariners........ 0 1 2  0 1 1  0 1 0  -  6 10  0
Tigers.......... 1 0 0  3 0 0  0 0 1  -  5  8  0

Win:Fassero(6-5) Loss:Thompson(2-6) Save:Sanders(2nd)
Homeruns- A.Rodriguez-2(12th), D.Wilson-2(8th), J.Encarnacion(1st)

DETROIT -- The Mariners completed a rare 4-game road sweep against the lowly Detroit Tigers behind the muscle of Alex Rodriguez who ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI in the 6 to 5 win.

Rodriguez enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 3rd inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 8th inning.  Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.  Brian Hunter choked big in the ninth to ruin the rally.  Hunter has been mired in a terrible slump.

The win was credited to Jeff Fassero(6-5) who went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs. Scott Sanders earned the save, his 2nd.  Justin Thompson(2-6) was the losing pitcher.  He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 7 innings of work.

'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Detroit's manager said.  'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'  Amazingly, Detroit led 3 of the 4 games in the series.

GRIFFEY HITS 3 JACKS!

Griffey robbing homer at Tiger Stadium
DETROIT -- Ken Griffey Jr. blasted 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Tiger Stadium where the Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers 13 to 5.

Griffey Jr. had a big evening at the plate.  He smashed a two-run homer in the 4th inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 6th inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 8th inning.  The Seattle offense was great, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

Griffey Jr. is the only player in the majors to have two 3 home run games this year.  He had his first 3 homer game on April 5th in Boston.  Damion Easley of the Tigers has a single 3 home run game this season.

The winning pitcher was Jamie Moyer(8-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Willie Blair(3-4) was given the loss.  He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

'I was really seeing the ball tonight,' Griffey Jr. said 'I wish it was always this easy.  I'm fuckin' awesome!'

EXPOS' SEGUI COLLECTS 6 HITS

  • Montreal's David Segui went an incredible 6-for-6 with a home run and 5 RBI's in tonight's winning effort against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.  It marks the first 6 hit game of the season and ranks among the best offensive performances of the year.  Incredibly, Segui is 9-for-his-last-10 at the plate!  His batting average has jumped 34 points in two days!

  • The closely watched series between the Yankees and Orioles is turning into a laugher.  So far through two games, the Yankees have been outscored 16-0.  Baltimore catcher Chris Hoiles had an incredible game tonight.  He was 4-for-6 with 2 jacks.

  • Ken Griffey, Jr. has been in a home run funk.  He hasn't hit a home run since May 23rd and has only hit two since May 5th.  Griffey is still slugging .714, however.  But still, come on, Ken!

  • Dodgers' backstop Mike Piazza owns a current 22-game hitting streak.  Both Ken Griffey Jr. and Tony Gwynn had their hitting streaks snapped on their 23rd games.  If Piazza can get a base knock tomorrow, he'd own the season record.  Piazza's hit 9 home runs during that stretch and is currently hitting lefties at a .445 clip on the season!

  • Scott Erickson of the Orioles in running away with the Cy Young title thus far.  Erickson is 9-1 with a 1.38 ERA.  His finest performance of the year came on April 25 against Boston.  He went 8 innings allowing just 1 hit and 0 walks.  He's also the best in the league at holding runners.  Base stealers are thrown out 66.7% of the time they run on him.

  • In his last start Jose Rosado of the Royals pitched 11 innings and struckout 13 but got a no-decision.  What gives?

  • Roger Clemens is king!  Clemens had a 17 strikeout performance on May 11 against Minnesota.  He has pitched 7 complete games this season, including 6 straight!  He held opponents scoreless for 3 starts in a row.  Incredibly, Clemens got his dick ripped off by the Yankees two starts ago: he went just an inning and a third and allowed 6 earned runs.

  • Angels' starter Allen Watson needs an exorcism.  He has allowed 20 home runs in 13 starts this season.  He allows 2.5 home runs per 9 innings pitched!  Some starters don't even walk that many per start.

  • Cincinnati's Mike Remlinger is the first pitcher this season to record 10 wins and he's a reliever!

TIGERS 3-0 SINCE MGR. MELTDOWN

OAKLAND -- Fresh off a victory against Randy Johnson and the Mariners, the Tigers continued their winning ways tonight with a 12-6 victory against the A's.  It marked their third straight win since the Manager lambasted the team in a post-game presser.

Travis Fryman had a nice day by the bay.  He finished 4-for-5 with two home runs, pushing his average up to .295.  Bobby Hamelin collected three hits and Bobbo Higginson hit a solid RBI double.  Starter Omar Olivares melted down during the 4th, walking in a pair of runners and allowing the Oakland order to bat around.  But Olivares and the relief corp were able to solve Mark McGwire: he was 0-for-4.

The Tigers are now just two games under the elusive .500 mark.  They haven't been able to hit .500 in quite some time.  They'll play just one more here in Oakland before heading home to play these same A's and the Mariners.
